Edtech Start up Genius Teacher raises $2mn

Genius Teacher, the startup launched by Housing.com founder Advitiya Sharma on Monday announced funding of $2 million in the angel round by some of the early-stage investors in India, including Whatsapp chief executive officer-India Abhijit Bose, Cred chief executive officer Kunal Shah, Freecharge co-founder Sandeep Tandon, Proptiger chief executive officer Dhruv Agarwal, Mmone online chief executive officer Justin Sway, Cvent co-founder Dan Lapus, Let’s Venture president Nimish Kampani, Snapdeal former vice-president Gaurav Gupta, and Fynd co-founder Farooq Adam along with two institutional investors too, namely, Whiteboard Capital and VKG Ventures LLP.

The company aims to use this funding to create products for teachers and onboard more than a million students on its platform in the next 12 months.

Sharma, who resigned from Housing.com in March 2016, set up the quiz-based e-learning platform focused on the K-12 category. The company creates personalized interest-based engaging content to enhance the learning experience for students. It uses strong interests like food, movies, sports nature, and more to make learning Maths, Science, and English more enjoyable.

The company run by Genius Learning Labs Pvt Ltd already provides services to about 70,000 students as a B2B platform. After launching its B2C platform, Sharma plans to expand the service to about 500,000 paid subscribers in the next 9-12 months.

Edtech users – both paid and free unique users – in K12 and post K12 segment have seen an increase, with the user base doubling from 45 million to 90 million. Online education offerings classes 1 to 12 are projected to increase 6.3 times by 2022, to create a $1.7 billion market.
