How to build effective parent-teacher communication? These Tips & Apps may help!

Behind the parents stand school, and behind the teacher the home – Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam

Home is considered as the first school and similarly, teachers are the guardians in school. Thus, a pupil’s progress largely depends on the communication between parents and teachers. It is important that teachers communicate effectively about the students’ progress and highlight the areas of improvement along with overall behavior.

On the other hand, the school has similar expectations from the parents. The parents need to know what’s happening in school and also understand their role.

Eventually, both parents and teachers are working on a common goal, better education and behavior of their child/ student.

What teachers can do?

Partner with them: Since teachers and parents have a common goal “better education of the child”, it is important that they work together and not against each other. Therefore, as a teacher, at the start of the academic year, partner with the parents. Ensure they understand that you are there to take care of their child in the school and also will keep them posted.

Gain their trust: As partners, it is important that parents trust you. Thus, you can also avoid any misunderstanding or miscommunication.

Communicate consistently: In today’s technological era, several learning management systems and applications are helping teachers and parents to communicate effectively and regularly. As parents are always “highly” interested in knowing everything about their child, communicate as frequently as possible. Thus, parents will understand you better and help you by working alongside you on the child’s weak areas.

Problem and Solution: If you are informing about a problem to the parent, ensure you also suggest some solutions or strategies. Help them understand that you both are working on a common goal.

What parents can do?

Positive involvement: Ensure you are involved positively with the school activities and communication. Your child gets influenced by your talks and may accordingly behave in the school.

Communication: Encourage teacher’s communication, ask for doubts and reply to their queries as well. Remember the universally known fact, communication is a two-way street.

Fortunately, several edutech apps and learning management systems are providing communication tools. Thus, the edtech platforms are ensuring seamless communication between the teachers and parents.
